OnePlus 5 Really Benefits from its gigantic 8GB RAM in Multi-Tasking.
OnePlus 5 is one of the most powerful flagship. As always, OnePlus try they best to differentiate themself from other flagships. With the release of 8GB RAM model of OnePlus 5, It had the biggest RAM size of all smartphone in the market. But is this amount of memory really benefits the users or it is just a spec war ? The Youtube user Timmer EM1 had get a hand on and test both models and already have answer to this question.
To summarize, He had both 6GB and 8GB models of OnePlus5. On the right is 8GB RAM with 128GB storage, on the left is 6GB RAM with 64GB storage.
The test start with fresh reboot of both devices. The tester then start lunching 18 applications one-by-one, start from basic apps like phone, camera and calculator and then working with some generic, social applications and finally games. After the first round of all application lunching, the tester run through all application again to see if the second or third lunching would benefit from the additional RAM or not.
The result shows almost zero difference in both model in first lunch of apps. The 8GB model load slightly faster in some 2 heavy games like Asphalt or GTA. Its not clear this faster speed came from additional amount of RAM or from bigger UFS 128GB which can increase file system reading speed.
The test become more interesting in the second run-through of all applications where the 8GB model clearly show the advantages over the 6GB model. While some of built-in app resulted in the same non-reload cached lunch, some heavy games need to be reload on the 6GB models. The difference is even wider on the third lunch where 8GB model still cache most of its app but the 6GB model needs to reload the games and some content in application again.
The conclusion is 8GB model of Oneplus 5 really benefits from additional RAM in multitasking. Although the difference is small, its good to know that OnePlus didn’t make the same mistake like they did in OnePlus 3 which under-utilized the RAM (They finally fixed it in later software update). OnePlus 5 Oxygen’s ROM can takes benefits of 8GB RAM out-of-the-box. This make OnePlus 5 with 8GB RAM the best, if not the only one, contender Flagship for high-end user who want to heavily multitasking.
