MediaTek Announced Helio P23 and P30, SoC for Affordable Devices
MediaTek had unveils their latest mid-range SoC Helio P23 and P30. These SoC are incremental upgrades of Helio P20 Series that launched over year and a half. While the SoC still retain the same Octa-Core Cortex A53 CPU, there had been improvement in GPU, Modems and Camera ISP. MediaTek will start rolling these SoC in Quarter 4 of these year.
The 2 SoCs released today, the Helio P30 and P23 are the successor to the Helio P25 and P20. Both SoCs are still using TSMC 16nm manufacturing process and still use the same overall design but there are some upgrade in components. For the P23 which is an upgrade of the P20. The first upgrade to note is a minor speed improvement in efficiency of quad cores A53 cluster from 1.6 GHz to 1.65 GHz while the clock of performance cluster remain at 2.3 GHz. The more meaningful upgrade can be found in GPU where MediaTek had upgrade to use Mali-G, the latest GPU from ARM with Bifrost architecture, this should give the performance improvement in gaming. Finally the Modem had been upgraded to support LTE Cat 7/13 300/150Mbps DSDS w/Dual VoLTE.
For the Helio P30, the story is a little more confusing as there had some downgrade from Helio P25. The high performance cluster clock had been dropped from 2.6 GHz to 2.3 GHz. Maybe MediaTek had realized that power-efficiency at 2.6 GHz is not optimal so there had to reduce the clock but this is still disappointing as this mean the reduction in peak processing performance. Apart from this, Helio P30 had get a healthy upgrade with updates in many components. The GPU is also upgraded to Mali-G with higher clock than P23 at 950 MHz, the camera ISP can now support H.265 recording, the dual camera support higher resolution sensors.
MediaTek is one of the biggest SoC player in the mid-range SoC Market. With the Helio P-Series that targeted for this market. Making it the good choices for OEM who are price-awareness on their mid-range. MediaTek had put focus on Helio P Series as there are good mix of volume and profitability. The P23 chipset will be globally launched in Q4 of this year while the P30 still limited only to china market for this time.
