MediaTek Helio X30 beats the PCMark Performance Chart, Ridiculous Power Consumption
Helio X30 is the latest High end SoC offering from MedieTek. The first phone to feature the SoC is Meizu Pro 7 Plus which just marketed in June 2017. The phone had been widely critiqued for being overprice for what its offer, mainly because of its X30 SoC and MediaTek brand.

Helio X30 is a very unique SoC with its Deca Core architecture. Its also feature 10nm fabrication process which is the same as latest Qualcomm and Samsung offering. It use A73 High performance core as featured in Kirin 960. MediaTek also implements Core A35 for power consumption. On the paper, X30 looks to be powerful and power efficient implementation, but is it true in practice ? Only benchmark can tells.
Today we got the benchmark of Meizu Pro 7 Plus to analyze the performance of Helio X30 SoC. The reviewer had benchmark the device with 3 standard benchmarks, namely Antutu, GFXBench and PCMark. The test result is being compared with Snapdragon 835 from Sony Xperia Z Premiem and Kiring 960 from Huawei Mate 9.
Antutu Benchmark Result
Antutu benchmark of Meizu Pro 7 Plus give the score of 143944. From the score, it can safely conclude that Helio X30 offer the high end performance level. We had a closer look on the SoC on how it perform in each tasks compared to Snapdragon 835 and Kirin 960
- 3D Performance – X30 offer a little better (around 5%) 3D performance than Kirin 960. The Snapdragon 835 beats everyone by a mile though, with the lead of over 50%
- UX Performance – X30 offer the best performance with 4% leads over Snapdragon and 25% leads over Kirin
- CPU Performance – X30 offer the best performance with
- RAM Performance – X30 lose Snapdragon and Kirin is the best with the leads of 25%
Overall, X30 offer really solid performance here in CPU department. The main weaknest of X30 is in graphic department where the score matter a lot in Antutu Score. It’s interesting to see how will X30 perform on real world application and user experience since its can score very well in this department.

GFXBench test the graphic performance from the implementation of SoC’s GPU. To made the result comparable across screen resolution, the test had been done in Off-Screen mode where the render resolution is fixed to 1920 x 1080 across every devices. The same 3 devices had been used to compare the performance in GXBench.
The weakness in X30 GPU continue to show in here. Overall the PowerVR Series7XT featured in X30 is weaker than what Snapdragon and Kirin offered. The different in the score are around 30-50% higher across the tests.

PCMark is an integrated tests that include various daily life tasks for mobile users. The score is calculated from the performance of web browsing, video editing, document editing, photo processing
This is the test where Helio X30 shines, with the result score of 6962 , It leads the horde of all Snapdragon 835. There is caveat, though, as the battery life of Meizu Pro 7 Plus is relatively worse to all implementation of Snapdragon 835. With the battery runtime of 5:35 hours compared to 8-10 hours of HTC U11, Xiaomi Mi 6 and Oneplus 5. Even the relatively large size 3500 maH battery can not cover the low power efficiency of Helio X30 as the run time of the devices is worse than many last year flagships.
What MediaTek (and Meizu) should had to offer ?
Current MediaTek’s is not in a good position as they had lose 20% of there revenue and 60% of profits compared to last quarter mainly because of higher competition from Qualcomm. Snapdragon offering had controlled all High end devices in the market and recent year Qualcomm products like Snapdragon 625 and 430 seemed to dominate a lot of low-end and mid-end products too. MediaTek had to win the Qualcomm in price/performance aspects as Helio X30 is still can not beat Snapdragon 835.
It’s also a hard time for Meizu as domestic market in china are getting more and more competitive. And Meizu Pro 7 series had already been criticized for too high price and gimmick feature rather than useful. Coupled with the lower performance of SoC than the market, Meizu had to find the way to improve their flagship lines as soon as possible. Its been rumored that they are working on Snapdragon Variants of Pro 7 Plus. This is not confirmed yet but it is highly possible as Meizu had to win the market.
